Gfire Standalone Client?

Postby chewit » Sat Mar 06, 2010 10:48 pm

This might never happen, but we have just been doing some thinking. We would like to know if anyone would like to see a standalone Gfire application, which will have tons of features, use QT toolkit and work on Linux, Windows and MacOS.

Please leave comment feedback as well!

I see no reason to have a standalone client. The entire point of pidgin is to consolidate several IM protocols into one program. Why split off and make another window for people to switch between if you can still implement xfire's features without splitting?

Now, I voted yes on this specifically for this reason. I talk to Oggy quite a bit about the code for this, and I know that pidgin limits a lot of things from the xfire client. I believe that if there were a split between the plugin and a full-featured client, that would be the best. The code could easily be shared, but the full-feature client could do more and would be easier for the coders to wrap their heads around since it's their creation. I don't think stopping the gfire plugin altogether would be wise. Now, I did hear that xfire would run under wine, but there are some linux zealots out there who refuse to touch everything microsoft. I used to be one such zealot for about 6 months until I realized I was just limiting myself. The whole point of the open source (or just open) mentality is to be able to use whatever code you want. Due to the existing zealots, I think it would be good for them to have an open client that has almost as many features as the official xfire client.

Just my oppinion.

Would be done for both, and programmed in parallel, so basically the development just slows down a bit :)

Yes

Actually I don't care if I can use all my IM account on one program. And I'm more familiar with Kopete, so Pidgin is just "extra" for me. Moreover, if standalone client provides more features than Pidgin plugin, it would be much more useful.

the one knowing more than you kids wrote:really, you kids will never manage to write some real software (except oggy maybe). all your memleak-collections suck, one of the most shitty codes i've ever seen for real.
kinda sad though ... could have been a cool project.

*Yawn* Even open source projects are being hit by know nothing trolls now? Sigh, I remember when being a troll had honor attached to it. Oh well.

I think this is a fantastic idea! As a big KDE fan, having Gfire with a Qt UI would be awesome! Right now Pidgin is one of the only GTK apps I have to use on my computer and the only protocol I use on it is Gfire. This idea gets two thumbs up from me!

i would love standalone client, since i wouldnt use pidgin anyway.
would like to see ingame chat and stuff like that. Pidgin seems to not have thatmuch of ways to create all those things for plugins.
