Gfire Gaming Party

The Gfire team is proud to present its first gaming party.

As Gfire (Xfire) is meant for gamers, we would like to offer the possibility to Gfire users to play their games with the community. The gaming party will happen on the 7th of November 14th of November and we would like to know what game(s) you would like to play.

More than 1 game will probably be played since we would like to let it happen the whole day. We hope to get enough persons and maybe we could organize this more often.

We will also make an event where users could play against developers. If a first person shooter is chosen, we would like to allow the best team to choose the maps/mods or whatever, to make it funnier.

Also if the event would be a success we would consider making an Ubuntu PPA with daily builds, because we know a lot of you would be interested. Maybe a good motivation? ;)

Now we would like to ask you to answer the following poll to let us know your preferences: http://bit.ly/gfireparty

We hope this will happen, and happy gaming!

Update:

The gaming party has been moved for a week. We didn’t had enough time to organize it and we want to give enough users the opportunity to read this post and join the party. Stay tuned and we will post shortly some news on which games are chosen and on which servers you can join.

Next IRC Meeting

Its been along time since the last one, mainly down to me starting University and moving away from home. Been apart from Gfire for a while.

The next meeting will be Sunday 15 November 2009 @ 1pm GMT!

Here is a time zone converter thingy to help what time you need to be there for.

Be there!

Windows 7 & Gfire

Currently, we are unsure if Gfire works with Windows 7. I assume it does, because I have tested Pidgin with Windows 7 and it works fine. Please could you post in the comments if you are using Gfire with Windows 7.

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone in the comments, Gfire works with Windows 7. I will update the info in the correct places.

We have done it, We in Ubuntu!

Many years of hard work, but finally Gfire will be in Ubuntu 9.10!
Found out today that Gfire 0.8.3 is the Universal repos!

New Dev & Server Down

Want to be the first to welcome Julian to the Gfire dev team. Another great addition to our growing team :D

In the next few days, the Gfire servers could be down for upto 48hours. The website, forums and games list downloader will not be accessible, this is due to a server change over. However, the wiki, svn and IRC will still be up and running.

Quick Update!

Hi all,

Long time since the last news update. Felt like letting you all know whats going on in Gfire.

To start with, on the web side. I have been updating the wiki, added all the release notes from version 0.1.0, for your viewing pleasure. However, all the IRC meeting notes have gone missing :( . I have also adding a list of reasons why Gfire is better than Xfire. Its on the “About” page on the website. Please add any of your own suggestions in the comments to this post.

On the development side, all three developers have been hard at work on the next major release of Gfire, 0.9.0.

  • oGGy – Currently working on File Transfer.
  • Warren – Currently working on Server Detection and making GameConfig easier to use.
  • Luxus – Currently working on porting Gfire to Adium. He has just got a new MacBook Pro. When this is achieved, it will make Gfire the only Xfire client for Linux, Mac and Windows!

I also want to take this time in congratulating the developers in there speedy work in getting Gfire to work again after the Xfire network change!

Gfire 0.8.3 Released!

As I said a few hours ago, Gfire 0.8.3 is coming and now its out!

We are pleased to announce our latest release for Gfire, 0.8.3. This release continues our support for 0.8.x series. This release fixes the connection issue from the Xfire 1.113 update.

Download 0.8.3 from here.

Read the full release notes here.

We have provided Gfire 0.8.3 as source code and ZIP and EXE file. DEB and RPM files will be out shortly.

Gfire 0.8.3 is a stable release, however if you find any bugs please let us know by posting a bug report on gfireproject.org or posting a thread on the forum.

UPDATE: RPM files are now online!

UPDATE 2: DEB files are now online!

Gfire Issue Update!

Yesturday, some of you may have seen luxus’s post regarding the major issue with Gfire due to the Xfire 1.113 update. Yes, we all know that Gfire can not connect to Xfire.

I was on holiday when the issue happened, and luxus had to make the call to address the Gfire community. I am now back and I want to update you all on the suituation and give you some more information.

The problem of not allowing Gfire users to connect to the Xfire network, due to the network code being wrong. It is affecting Gfire 0.8.2 and below. People who use the SVN, should not be having any problems. This is because we have fixed the problem on the SVN build.

This means: WE HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM!

However, you may all use th SVN, but it is very unstable and its not recommended to use it only if you really need to access Xfire.

Good news! We are releasing 0.8.3, which will fix the problem! This will be out in the next few days with the DEB, RPM and Windows Installers. I strongly recommend to wait until the 0.8.3 release instead of using SVN build.

Thanks for the Support!

Thank you all for your comments of support for the project. We appreciate all your positive comments on the work we all do, making this project a success. I was abit harsh in my last post, and I apologise for that. I now see how great our community is. I just felt a little let down, due to the amount of work I put in to make sure we have a great community. I only know of one other open source project, Ubuntu, which does as much community as we do.

I think we should still have a IRC meetings, but maybe next time I should give you all a month’s notice on when the next meeting will be. I want as many people there, since the meetings are focused around getting feedback from you all, direct feedback to all the developers. You being there can improve the project with your feedback and you can also suggest features you want to see adding to Gfire.

Again, Thanks for all your support. However, it will great to see the same support carried over into the forums and IRC channel (#gfire, freenode network) ;)

1 July 2009 IRC Meeting

Our IRC Meeting was last night, disappointing not to have hardly any input from the community, but the developers discussed alot about 0.9.0 and 1.0.0.

I starting to think about not having a meeting again due to lack of support from the community, please let me know if you want another meeting in the comments.
